Constituting Happiness with Woods

Residential Flat Designed by Li-Yung Chen and Wei-Cheng Tsai

Creating a Simple and Happy Home

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, finding happiness in the simplest moments is a true luxury. The residential flat design, aptly named "Constituting Happiness with Woods," by Li-Yung Chen and Wei-Cheng Tsai, captures the essence of a joyful and harmonious home. This design project showcases the beauty of wood and its ability to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The inspiration for this design came from the desire to connect the private and public areas of the home seamlessly. The use of partial wood grilles and a wood door creates a visual link between these spaces. The door, adorned with a vivid painting, blurs the line between the wall and the door itself, making it an integral part of the indoor scene. The lighter-colored woods and wood grain floors in the bedrooms create a serene sleeping environment, showcasing the designers' skillful use of materials.

What sets this design apart is its focus on fostering togetherness and shared experiences. The young couple who owns this residential flat cherishes moments of cooking together, enjoying coffee by the window, and sharing breakfast. The customized wooden table becomes the heart of their home, where they spend quality time together. The L-shaped wooden table and kitchen island provide ample space for cooking and dining, creating a wonderful environment for family bonding.

The design also incorporates artistic elements, with paintings adorning the walls throughout the space. These paintings subtly differentiate the walls from the doors, while the warm wooden colors tie the entire design together. The rectangular public area is symmetrically divided into a living room and a dining room, providing a balanced and harmonious layout.

The technical specifications of this apartment are worth noting, as it spans 120 square meters. The designers' attention to detail is evident in the meticulous placement of wooden cabinets in both the living and dining rooms. The large table, made from solid woods and cast irons, extends from the dining room to the window, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

This design project was completed in January 2017 in Taichung, Taiwan. The designers conducted extensive research to ensure the consistency of materials used throughout the space. The wooden decorations on the walls and tables in the dining room and kitchen create a three-dimensional visual experience, showcasing their commitment to detail and craftsmanship.

For their exceptional work on "Constituting Happiness with Woods," Li-Yung Chen and Wei-Cheng Tsai were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness, contributing to an improved quality of life.

With its emphasis on simplicity, togetherness, and the beauty of wood, "Constituting Happiness with Woods" is a testament to the power of design to create a truly happy home.
